AI can run your Computer, Your City, but Not Your Car
Tech News from the week of 6/19
Welcome back my Tech Curious friend. I’m so glad you’re here. We took a little time off, as we waited for Apple’s Developer Conference to finish… and oh boy do we have news for you now. So let’s get started.
Table of Contents
AI Now Stands for Apple Intelligence
That’s right. The big news, which everyone was expecting, was that Apple was going to finally dive into AI. Now Apple tends to do new tech in one of two ways. First to market, and then they get it right two to four revisions in (anyone actually remember the first iPhone with only 2G capability and no video) or waits, and gets it right.
And, in order to make it their own, they name it special. Kind of like FireWire is IEEE 1394, the phone is an iPhone, etc. Thus the name Apple Intelligence. It’s a mere marketing gimmick that people love.
So, sitting back on the hype, Apple has released their own version, and instead of baking it into the apps, they are looking at baking it into the OS (Operating system), so its more accessible to more apps. It is expected not only in their laptop/desktop computers but also the iPad and iPhone.
This creates some potential security issues, however.
Musk Says Apple Products Won’t Be Welcome
Elon Musk wasted little time in speaking out against Apple’s plan to incorporate AI into their OS. Fearing security concerns, especially how AI often uses the inputs to further train itself. He is threatening to not allow any Apple products into his companies.
I’m curious to see if other companies might follow suit, especially since Apple has poor central management to turn features like that off from a central IT location.
AI Mayor
No one seems to like politics, and it can make good people not run for office. Is an AI mayor a better choice?
Victor Miller is the “meat puppet”, actually on the ballot, but he says he’ll just use a special bot he’s created for making all the decisions. He claims it has better ideas, and understands the law better than most humans.
With approximately 2/3rds of Americans disapproving of Congress, this might actually be a plan.
Waymo Misunderstands the Concept of Pole Position
Waymo, the driverless taxi service, recently recalled close to 700 cars because of an issue with running into poles. At least one car was severely damaged, although no people were hurt.
This is one of those edge cases, but with a 3,000 pound car, it can be quite dangerous, hence the recall.
Microsoft Goes to Washington
Recent lapses in security mean that Microsoft President, Brad Smith, will testify before a House of Representatives panel on homeland security.
This is important as Microsoft has several government contracts, and has been the source of several leaks that were quite preventable.
