Tech News Stories from the week of May 19th... Part 2
Welcome back my Tech Curious friend. I’m so glad you’re here. Below you can find information about the most recent tech news. So let’s get started.

Musk and Chinese EVs
Should Chinese Elective Vehiciles be allowed to enter the market? Well, after saying that they would "demolish" global competitors without trade barriers earlier this year, he has seems to have changed his tune.
Now Elon Musk is saying that there shouldn’t be a 100% tariff on Chinese made EVs.
So the question is, what does he know that we don’t? Or does it matter, and he wants more EVs to reduce global emissions which are said to be higher than a few years ago due AI data centers?
AI Overview says what?
Google’s much hyped AI overview is showing it’s weakness very publicly in the first few days of being released. It has been giving some bizarre and inaccurate results, to say the least. It has also been giving some dangerous results, which is even more concerning.
Known results include:
Adding glue to pizza to keep the toppings in place - at least they suggested non-toxic glue
No countries in Africa start with the letter “K” - except maybe Kenya
It recommends eating a small rock a day - no idea on how small a small rock is
and many more…
This reminds us of the Gemini image generation rollout where it attempted to generate unbiased images, and instead created images that were historically and accurately incorrect in sometimes comically poor ways.
So the question is, is this just a hiccup along the way, or does Google not understand AI as well as it thinks it does, and is just trying to play catchup with the other big players.
Samsung’s Big Reveal
The last couple of weeks have seen big reveals with OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google all touting their latest (mostly AI) updates. Digital devices also have their place, and Samsung is rumored to be releasing its next batch of phones, and more, as early as July.
July?! Yes, that seems years away, but only in the technology sphere.
ChatGPT isn’t as good at programming as you might think…
As I Computer Science professor, I often remind my students that you need to learn how to program to make sure AI tools give you good answers. Sure, I’m sure they think I’m just being mean, but now there is a study showing that I know what I’m talking about.
A recent Purdue study showed that ChatGPT got 52% of programming questions wrong. Anyone who has used it knows the amount of time you have to spend debugging the code it generates and getting it to work with something it just generated. The bigger the task, the worse it is.
Personally, I’ve written prompts that generated a couple hundred lines with no errors. And turned around and written a prompt that not only didn’t answer the question posed but also failed to write code that would even compile. Everything from bad syntax to missing functions and variables.
