AMD Launches New Chips

During the 1990s and 2000s, AMD was known for making chips that weren’t quite as good as Intel’s, but at their price point, they were more than good enough for most people, if you could wait for them.

Well, they’re up to their old tricks, as they are the latest to announce their newest AI focused chips, coming out later this year. Their goal is to take market share from Nvidia, which currently controls about 80% of the market.

Nvidia’s Market Cap

Speaking of Nvidia, they just became the second largest company in the US stock market, crossing $3 trillion in market capitalization. Their stock has risen 147% so far this year, (and 3,290% over the last 5 years) first because of the crypto then the AI market. However, the only question is how long can this continue, and will they hold on to the lead?

It’s worth noting that Nvidia is scheduled to do a 10 to 1 stock split on Friday, to help lower the cost of their stock, so more people can afford it.

The top five companies are all tech companies: Microsoft, Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet (Google), and Amazon.

Janet’s Yellin’ about AI and Finance

Janet Yellen Sec of Treasury

Yellen is expected to deliver a meeting later this week to Financial Stability Oversight Council and Brookings Institution AI conference. A prerelease of the transcript says that while it has lots of good factors, there are issues with them because the public doesn’t know they work and also it can cause groups of investors to act the same way which might cause issues. Because of this, the government is looking highly into regulations.

At the same time, she’s talking about some benefits of AI, such as improving customer service, tracking down fraud, and more.

Apple and OpenAI to Work Together

Initial reports are that Apple has signed a deal to incorporate OpenAI into their products. We know that Apple has been working on smaller models, so they could run on mobile devices already. We also have believe that Apple is updating Siri, like Amazon is updating Alexa, to have a more conversational feel.

There are reports that Apple might also be teaming up with Google, in which case, they might be giving their users an option of Google AI or OpenAI. Only time will tell.
