Welcome back my Tech Curious friend. I’m so glad you’re here. Below you can find information about the most recent tech news. So let’s get started, and no place better to start than with Apple…

Apple’s Big “Glow Up” Event
Last week Apple had their big “Glow Up” event where they released the iPhone 16. Unlike many companies, their focus wasn’t on AI, but on health uses and updates to their hardware. This includes checking for sleep apnea and protection for their users’ ears, amongst others.
The biggest shock for many is the return of the physical buttons. Something Apple has been avoiding for years, but wanted by many consumers.
In addition to the big things, there are many small things that can be read about in the link below.
Unfortunately, all those new things… aren’t enticing people to buy. So far, the iPhone 16 has the worst initial sales records in a long time.
Apple’s Big Bill Comes Due
It’s a good thing that Apple had their big release, which is expected to help them sell more product… because they have a big tax bill due. (Of course, initial demand is low… possibly due to other economic concerns.)
The EU has ruled that Ireland has been under charging taxes to some international firms, and for Apple, they will owe $14B US. (If you want to see how big that number is— $14,000,000,000. If you counted $1 every second, and didn’t stop, it would take approximately 443 years.)
In addition to Apple, Ireland was also fighting this. Why wouldn’t they want more tax dollars… well, they’re playing chess while the EU is playing Checkers. Ireland wants to be seen as a low tax country to encourage companies to move their business there.
AI’s Threat to the Environment
How much power does it take to ask ChatGPT, or any other AI tool, a question? Well, that’s a good question, and one which the AI companies are not talking about.
While we know it takes a lot of power it takes to run data centers, the AI data centers are being cagey with disclosing just how much power, and thus how bad they are for the environment.
But how much power, well a retired nuclear power plant is being brought back online to help power a Microsoft AI data center.
The Cost of Crypto Scams Grows
A lot of people get into crypto because someone said it was a good idea… and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, unless they get caught up in a scam.
Scammers cost Americans an estimated $5.6 Billion ($5,600,000,000) dollars last year alone. That is an increase of approximately 45% from the previous year.
While crypto scams only make up about 10% of all financial scams, they are becoming larger, and more complex as criminals get smarter about it.
Everyone has an option on social media. Just do five minutes of doom scrolling, and you will find someone with an opinion on it. Not only that, it seems to be worse for our youth… so much so that it has done the impossible. That is, get both political parties to hate on it.
42 state and territory Attorney Generals are calling upon congress to put a warning label on Social Media bringing attention to the inherent risks to today’s youth.
This is after the Surgeon General suggested something similar just the week before.
