New Tech Companies… Old Spy Techniques

Rippling, a workforce management platform, publicly released the affidavit of their employee, who testified that he was working as a spy for the HR tech company’s arch rival Deel. It’s just like James Bond, but without the cool gadgets from Q, and all the martinis.

Companies are always looking to get an edge up on their competition, and while there are great, and legal, ways to do this, having a paid mole inside the company is not one of them.

Rippling claims that the employee was paid to provide trade secrets, insider information such as identifying customers who might move to their competitor. The use of RICO charges (initially used to get the mafia) have been flying. We’ll just have to see what shakes out.

Another Day, another AI Model

AI - Robo LLama

Meta has released a new pair of generative AI models, named Llama 4 (Scout and Maverick), from its flagship, open-source AI software. The models can process and generate text, video and images, and will now power Meta's in-app chatbot.

Supposedly the rise of Chinese-made DeepSeek reportedly put Llama's development "into overdrive." Which means, of course, this in now the “best” model, in the ever changing landscape, until another one comes out next week.

Another Game Becomes a Hit Movie

I remember when computers games were games, and sometimes they became a terrible movie that you avoided. However, this weekend Minecraft wasn’t just the number one movie, but it made over a quarter billion dollars on its opening weekend.

After a lackluster Q1 at the movie box-office, and not to say anything about the much anticipated, but disappointing, Snow White, things might be turning around. We also might be seeing more computer games becoming movies with recent hits like - The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Sonic (1, 2, and 3), and more, and I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.

Not all Game News is Good Though

A bag o money

Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 will not be start on April 9th, 2025 in the United States as planned “in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.” The planned price for the Switch 2 was already $450, 50% more than the original Switch.

With Nintendo not announcing where it will be manufactured yet, it is having to weigh the amount of tariffs, and if/how much it will affect the price.

TikTok gets a Slight Reprieve

President Trump Just Gave TikTok Another Reprieve to work out a deal. Several US companies have made offers to purchase the social media app, including Perplexity AI, Oracle, Amazon, and more.

This deal gives TikTok 75 more days to work in good faith to closing a deal to sell the company and is the second reprieve they’ve gotten so far. No word on who’s the front runner to buy it, or if TikTok will even actually sell it.

FYI - some links may be affiliate links. If you choose to purchase from the link, I may receive a minor percentage fee, but the price to you is the same.
