New Year, New Tech & AI News

Welcome back my Tech Curious friend. I’m so glad you’re here. With a new year and new semester, we’re back at it.

Below you can find information about the most recent tech news. So let’s get started.

Executive Action Removes AI Safeties

On his first day as president, Donald Trump used executive orders to remove some of Joe Biden’s executive orders, including several around AI safety. Generally shown as a positive for AI and technology progress, especially when tied to the Stargate Project.

What is interesting is there are two camps coming out after this announcement. First is those who fear that without these safeguards in place, you can have many catastrophes occurring. Some fearing even the end of the world, ala what the Terminator Movies tried to prevent. (Others say anything after Terminator 2 is a catastrophe… but that’s a different story.)

Others, seemingly more from Europe, are thrilled, as the cost of compliance and fines for not being compliant can often hamper new technologies. The fact that the US has 8 of the top 10 AI companies is often seen as evidence of that.

TikTok Ban Delayed

For those wanting TikTok to stick around, don’t worry, it’s got a reprieve. President Trump has given a reprieve to allow TikTok to be sold in part, or in whole, to a US company. If 50% of it is owned by a US based company, then it will be allowed to stay.

So far, potential buyers such as Mr. Beast, and Perplexity have thrown their hat into the ring, but no words on if they will be considered.

X Label’s Parody Accounts

not a real person... really.

One challenge with AI fact checkers is they rarely account for parody. Seeing the Onion, or The Babylon Bee being fact checked is not only sad but also draws into question the legitimacy of said fact checkers.

Clearly no one would believe the image above is real, but to make things clearer, X will not allow parody sites to be labeled as such, so the Karens of the world won’t have to worry about if something is real, fake, or real fake.

DeepSeek Makes Quick Progress

deepseek

AI is changing at a momentous pace. And while we see new models coming out fairly quickly, they rarely shock as much as DeepSeek, a new model out of China.

Not only did it come out of nowhere, it is putting up numbers as good or better than existing models, for a fraction of the cost. This has investor’s scared, as well as many in the tech field.

Stargate - An AI Moonshot?

Just a day into his presidency, Donald Trump announced this generation’s moon shot project. Called Stargate (no reference to the movie) he seeks to work with captains of the computing and AI industry, including Oracle, OpenAI, and Softbank. This public/private sector venture aims to reshape America’s position in the AI field to the tune of $500 billion.

The initiative aims to build up to 20 massive AI data centers across the United States. With the stated goal “declaration of confidence in America’s potential” according to Trump. The first facility is already under construction in Abilene, Texas.
